I may have used Ruger's serial number listing as a basis of my acquisition date of this pistol while updating my log book sometime in the past. I'm going to call Ruger records and see if I can clarify this since one reference I've seen does indicate the the Mk678 MII Government Target Models were first introduced in 1986. Ruger's web page indicates that the beginning serial number for MkII pistols for 1985 was 211-13150 the serial number on my pistol is 210-44112 which would seem to indicate it was shipped in 1984 unless this is another case of Ruger's assignment of 'un-sequential' serial number blocks.
According to my records I bought this pistol back in 1984. Blackhawk, are you sure you bought yours in 1984? I thought they were introduced in 1987 - I seem to recall running out and buying the first one I could find after reading an introductory article in one of the gun magazines. Since the Mark III serial numbers start with 227-00001 in 2004, my guess is that you indeed have one of the last Mark II's built. Had Ruger continued Mark II production into 2006, the first serial number of that year could have been, say, 226-BR549. I didn't do much of a search, but I doubt you'll find the 226 prefix listed anywhere. What it says is that the first serial number used in 2005 was 225-84467 - it says nothing about what the highest number (or prefix) was. Maybe it is the last last mk II version ?Take another look at the Ruger web site (here). The prefix serial number it is 226 and on the Ruger history serial numbers data the prefix on the mk II stop at 225. On the receiver there are the 3 holes with screw to mount an optic sight. I just buy a second hand Ruger mark II bull barrel, inox version, barrel lenght it is 5,50. I just picked up a Ruger M77 in 338 win mag. Model # 10117 Catalog # MKIII678G I spoke with Ruger records department and I was told that there were approximately 200 units made and sent to one distributor and then production of this model was ceased.
